Gabrielle Duplantier

Floriane. Photo de Gabrielle DuplantierSelf-taught since the beginning, Gabrielle has always been inspired by a certain noble, secret, feminine beauty.
She photographs close friends who share her life. She elaborates the images in her laboratory using the particular feminine aesthetic treatment that caricaturises her work. As time goes by her angle is larger and the central figures are integrated into vast backgrounds.
The dense black & white give her often sober and abstract pictures, an enigmatic depth.
In this ambivalent universe, people and nature are treated in the same manner: they seem
Timeless and serious, anecdotic and futile. The artist puts herself forward into the changing exterior conditions, harsh contexts – movement and obscurity are conjugated with chance and
The ephemeral in order to find surprising depths.
The pictures of the Pays Basque country have the smell of misty earth; men, hardly visible in the midst of these disquieting lands seem to murmur a truthfulness.
To attain this Gabrielle enters into communion with her subjects – for her a physical immersion is capital for the final intensity of the work.
Her inspiration could come from the photo engravings and photos of Clarence H. White, Steichen, A. Stieglitz, Julia Margaret Cameron, from Balthus or the seductive, stormy women
Of the Brontë sisters…………

Marion Lartigue.
