See Potential

A Photography project in Chicago

SEE POTENTIAL (http://kck.st/tnbSkD) is a community engagement initiative on the South Side of Chicago.

Born from photographer Emily Schiffer's desire to use documentary images for tangible social change, SEE POTENTIAL is an extension of a photography documentary project Emily began last summer with support from the Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund.

SEE POTENTIAL addresses the absence of affordable, healthy foods on Chicago's South Side. In partnership with The Center for Urban Transformation <http://www.cutchicago.org/>  (CUT) and in collaboration with other photographers, SEE POTENTIAL will install large-scale photographs to publicize CUT's innovative community development plans, and mobilize residents to support them.

They're using text messaging and GPS technology to create petitions that demonstrate the community’s support for redevelopment. These petitions will be used to persuade policy makers, city officials, and contractors to implement the development plans depicted in the instillations.

SEE POTENTIAL is using "crowdfunding" to raise money for the project.  The goal is to mobilize supporters who believe that people on the South Side need and deserve more substantive resources in their neighborhoods.  Donations, even if only a few dollars, become part of a collective effort to make this a reality.  In addition to donating, please help them become more visible by posting the link on your facebook page and twitter.

Yesterday a selection of Schiffer's images from this project were featured on Time Magazine online, have a look: http://lightbox.time.com/2011/12/12/securing-food-in-chicagoland/#1.
