« Tangente is a train trip departing from Paris with sole destination being Oulan-Bator, the capital of Mongolia.
By train because I prefer land and sea travel which allow one the necessary length of time to travel. Oulan-Bator because I had already dreamed of it and wanted to discover the reverse side of a country known almost solely for its countryside… »
His work consists of rendering an accountof a place and its inhabitants. He shows particular interest for the urban world. First there is paris where he lives and dwells on various aspects of the city. Then there are his chosen destinations, the pretext for long trips that Laurent Chardon likes to call « tangents » : Oulan-Bator in Mongolia, La Paz in Bolivia, Djéol in Mauritania…
His photographs tell us nothing precise as would traditional photo-journalism : no event, no document, no proof. They simply offer us impressions, a highly personal regard on the contemporary world. Laurent Chardon gives the suggestion of an urbanity that is synonymous with wandering and solitude, a space in which the human seems astray, even overcome by the surrounding city.
