Margherita Crocco is a young artist photographer living and working in
Paris and New York. She spent her childhood between Switzerland and
Italy, her mother’s country. She went to Paris where she started to
study anthropology and obtained a Master of Anthropology focused on the
women’s status through the collective imaginary.
She studied photography at the International Center of Photography in
New York City, where she learnt from Robert Blake, Frank Franka, Chuck
Kelton.
In December 2005, she got a sholarship from ICP. She showed her series
« paradoxalsvisions » during the “alternative” Month of Photography
2006, at the Galerie Sévigné / Sévigné Gallery in Paris. In 2006, she
was selected for the « Focus on Monferrato » organised by the Tuscany
Photographic Workshop, and also for the Infinity International Awards.
Taking pictures has become part of her life. It is the need to visually
register parts of her life, the time of being, the time of life - her
experience and the people around her. She uses photography to document
what is around and inside her.
She seeks to give a sense of space and time by letting the viewer see
through the photographs and experience the same emotions. The moments
in her photography contain feeling and drama; sometimes candid,
sometimes posed, full of realism or fantasy, based on her mood or an
individual situation. Through photography, she tells stories, creates
awareness and evokes emotions.
On the one hand, she is influenced by her academic background in
anthropology. Part of her work is therefore focused on a utopian
objectivity. On the other hand, she finds it necessary to use
photography in a more abstract and plastic way.
She demonstrates that photography can be a social document on a
subjective level and she combines, in an interesting way, fiction with
reality, transparency with opacity, and depth with surface.
